Goodnight

Goodnight, I call,
Waving at the stars.
Goodnight, sun,
As it slips below the horizon.
I lay on my back
And stare up at the sky
Watching the moon rise up
And stars spot the darkness
I smile, closing my eyes
As the cool breeze comes over me
And my thoughts flow freely,
As I take your hand in mine

And for once
I realize
I don't feel so alone

With you by my side,
hand-in-hand
We enjoy the silent company,
No bother whatsoever
As we watch the night pass on
And you fall asleep
So I gently pick you up
Struggling, but succeeding
In returning you to the car
And driving you safely home

I tuck you into the covers
And kiss your nose softly
Smiling as you mumble something,
Smiling and turning under the sheets
I step back silently,
And back away,
Leaving a small note of my being there
Before returning to my own home

I lay in bed
Staring at the ceiling
And glancing out the window
At the dark, star-speckled sky
And I think about that night
Wondering if again
I'll get to lay out in that field
Watch the day turn dark
With your hand in mine...
